Poor self-esteem could be the root cause of all or many of your child's problems!

Speaking from a parent perspective, I am acutely aware of how challenging and draining it is to deal with your own child's emotional ups and downs. We all have aspirations for our children. When they seem to be having trouble coping with schoolwork, friendships, sporting activities or just being happy, it is very difficult for us to acknowledge this and be objective enough to help them.

As a Paediatric Occupational Therapist, I have had the privilege of working as a professional with parents and children over the past 20 years. It has been a longstanding fascination and passion of mine to strive to understand the reasons why some children are more than willing to give anything a go, whilst others run in the opposite direction when given the same opportunity. Based on my therapy experience and knowledge, I have been able to develop effective strategies for motivating kids to take action and as a result, help children feel great about themselves.

The power of a parent's interaction with a child is enormous. If you as a parent can connect with your child by demonstrating understanding and empathy, there is a much greater chance that you will be able to guide them to achieving success in any area they wish to work on. You can help them to see the possibilities and the best way to approach a challenge with confidence and resilience. Without you, a child with low self-esteem will have a very difficult time working out how to move forward towards self worth and happiness.

The feeling of competence allows us to feel good about ourselves. It motivates us to move on to bigger and more difficult challenges, which leaves us feeling capable of achieving and worthy of happiness. Self worth is dependent on the success of one's actions to meet life's challenges. It is not hard to see how neglecting to take action, can very easily lead to poor self esteem.
